catalyc converter

I would like to know pros/cons of removing catalyc converter. My state doesnt have inspection, so it wont be a problem removing it. Lately, its making alot of noise and I hate it. If i remove it, will the noise go away. Just want to know all positives and negatives
Thanks

Re: catalyc converter

If it is a factory converter on an explorer it should be bolted in if thats the probem you can go to an auto parts store and buy the bolts and nuts for it.

It depends on what year it is. If it is a newer model your trouble codes are going to go nuts. I would replace it.

Re: catalyc converter

are you sure theres no regulations? what state do you live in?? i live in illinois and if you get pulled over and they see you've tampered with the cat (granted they get on the ground and look) you can get tagged with a $2500 dollar fine. In North Carolina it's much, much higher. I would assume your state does have regulations. The cat is designed to remove emissions to not pollute the air and it is a health issue as well. the catalytic converters also have o2 sensors regulating your engine. your engine can run way out of whack with the senors gone. trust me ive thought many times doing this to my truck and a couple friends i have actually did, it sounds obnoxious and i can only imagine how it sounds on an explorer. its better replacing it than possibly getting pulled over with it gone.

Well you your engine computer is going to read the diagnostics from the o2 sensors and will more than likely read it as being rich. Know what the computer does to compensate? It leans the mixture out. Running an engine lean will lead to premature engine damage ( and you cursing and walking all the way home). Trust me the little bit of money you spend on the cat will dwarfed by the amount a new engine will cost. Check this site Rockauto.com they have them for the 4.0 for like $250.00. Anyway good luck.

Re: catalyc converter

If it came on it it from factory it is illegal to remove it.
Any time you operate it on a federal highway you will be required to have it and can be fined if you do not.
If the state does not get you the federal boys can.
Ever see them road checks along the road? Do not go threw one without it.
Also if you are in a accident they may check it out to.
And as said you engine will not run right without it.
Taking it off will cost you more in the long run.
Even if you do not want to put a oem factory job on it there is a lot of aftermarket cats and also most muffler shops can fix you up with something.

Also, i guess i should have posted a new thread but i am sure you guys can point me better looking at response to my other question. so the question is, when i put my car into 4x4 low or high, i get this loud humming noise, sounds like something is rubbing against one another and it gets louder with acceleration. any ideas?
