Ford Fairlane 1977 petrol gauge wont read properly.sits on full and moves as I drive especialy when I go up hills. Or so if its low when I drive up hill the engine starts spluttering as if its starving for petrol but when Im on the straights it goes good again. When I say low its still about quarter of a tank in her.

Re: Ford
I'd get that fixed if I were you, it sounds like a real pain. Try taking it to a car repairer as these people are invaluable when it comes to getting your car repaired

Re: Ford
Hi, The sending unit in the tank is bad and or a bad connection at the tank wiring, giving you a false reading at the guage on the dash...Best answer I can give you for now....See Ya, Clay.......

Re: Ford
The sending units are easy to replace. Does it ever go below full? If it stays on full, all the way to the top, you have a short, you are grounding out, if it moves down but not at the rate it is supposed to, like going from full to 1/4 instantly, then it's the sending unit. Those old ones are like a reostat switch and if there is a bad section it won't send at that level.
