Re: down shift

Mine's an 85, but if I have it in second it'll shift between first and second.

The transmission was re-built not that long ago and it's been like that since the re-build.
I never drove it before then though.

Ive done that once or twice it depends on what speed your going i think when you drop in to 2nd it will limit the trany from upshifting further, Ither way its probly not the best for the car at all so i really don't fool around w/ it though thats why i got an automatic

Re: down shift

Well do not worry about it unless you are looking for a good way to destroy the engine and transmission. Your blazer transmission is a long way for from your dads Bravada.
And if your dad is smart he will not let you drive his if you drive it like you do yours.
Automatic transmissions are made to put in drive and drive.
The automatic means they will shift there self.
If you want to shift from 2 to low or low to second get a standard transmission.

Re: down shift

The only time i would ever recommend downshifting like that in an automatic is to use engine braking if your going down a long hill......... otherwise just leave it in Drive or else your gonna have to buy a new transmission soon

Re: down shift

WELL I HAVE HEARD THAT ONE. I just done it ONLY ONE TIME BEFORE SOMEWHERE SOMEPLACE.
Not a very good way to test a transmission.
The transmissions are a 4LT60E.
The E stands for electronical controled.
Just because one does it and the other one does not is because the way the pcm/vcm are programed and driving conditions.
When you mash the pedal to the metal you can force a down shift if the conditions are right.
But forced downshifts may be hard on transmission.
You can rip a transmission out sometimes making them do things they are not made to do.
Better to just put it in drive and drive it normal and let the trans take care of itself. That way your transmission can have a long happie life.
I am sure your dad would be very sad if his transmission went out when you were test driving it.

Re: down shift

It depends how the valve body was designed, or in the case of electronic, programmed. Some transmissions will upshift from 1 to 2 and downshift from 2 to 1 with the shift lever in "2". Others will remain in second gear, even from a standing start, until you shift it manually to another gear.
