Billards-Pool: Little insight please

Alright I'm decent to good at pool except for one thing. I don't know nothing bout english. If someone could fill me in one the dynamics of using it or turn me on to a sited that tells ya with diagrams or what not I would be deeply appreciative.

as in what we, the english/british, call "side" on the ball?
it's pretty much used to control what the cue ball does after impact.
what it does depends on the actual placement of the balls.
