YJ Transfer Case

I am looking to buy a used transfer case for my 93 YJ. It is an I6 with a 5 speed transmission. I have been looking on e-bay for some but i have noticed a few. The problem I am having is that im not sure if a transfer case from an automatic will work with my 5 speed. I saw one that said it would work with an auto or an AX-15 tranny. Does anyone know what will work and what wont? And how do i know what kind of tranny i have?

Re: YJ Transfer Case

It won't. The auto and the ax-15 have a 21 spline input, and a ax-5 has a 23 pline input. The ax-5 transmission came with the 6-cyl and the ax-15 came with 4-cyl

Re: YJ Transfer Case

The AX15 is the manual transmission that comes behind the 4.0. It has a 23 spline output shaft, the same as the automatic (TF999) that comes behind the 4.0. The problem that you may run into (Im not positive, Ive only read this) is that the input shaft in the t-case is longer for the automatic than it is for the manual.
I would just keep searching for a t-case from a manual 4.0 YJ to be safe. They should be easier to find anyway.

Re: YJ Transfer Case

i found one on e-bay that i think will work. your right though, the difference is only in the input shaft, different number of splines and different lengths. paid $300 for it, dunno if that is a good deal but i guess it doesnt matter now lol.

It helps some if you lower the transmission down a couple inches from where it normally is. Your mounts and everything are pretty forgiving, you can actually bring it down several inches to get more room on top.

Re: YJ Transfer Case

yea i thought about that i was just worried about breaking one of the mounts or something else that isnt willing to flex down with the block and tranny.
