my fuel gauge is going nuts!!!!!!!

I have a 2000 blazer LT. When it is idling, the gas gauge will go back and forth. After I drive it for a while, the needle settles to where it is right, so I still know how much gas I have, but when it sits, it goes from e for a few seconds, and then shoots over to f. Sometimes it goes back and forth between 1/2 and full and then shoots down to e. It is very disturbing, because sometimes, I don't know how much gas I have. I just want to get some ideas to see if it's something I can do myself, or if it's something I should have the garage do. I bought it used about 2 months ago, and have a service warranty, so it probably won't cost anything to fix it, but it'll save on the diagnostic charge. thanks. Also, there is a square black box hanging down next to the mirror. I am not sure what it is. I think it might be onstar, but other people I know who have onstar, don't have that box there. I will post pictures tomorrow.

Take a look at this link. If you're mechanically inclined,You can get the part and do the job for less than $100.00. (This is for a 2 door Blazer - '97 to 2001. A 4 door will be a different p/n)

Re: my fuel gauge is going nuts!!!!!!!

Mine does that too, if you dont want to spend the money to fix it right away try this......

Fill your gas tank

Set the trip meter to zero then take a small gas tank with you and drive it as you normally would until its almost out of gas (you can tell cuz they engine will start to sputter and sound like its gonna stall). Use the trip meter to see how far you went. Now everytime you fill your gas tank reset the trip meter and use that until you decide to fix it. Works perfectly for me

Just what I do. I usually go to about 220 or 230 and then fill up just to be safe. Works for now though!

Re: my fuel gauge is going nuts!!!!!!!

I've got a 98 that started having the same fuel gauge problem. Started using the trip odometer to check mileage. Then two weeks later my fuel pump went out completely. Left me stranded. The new fuel pump assembly has the fuel gauge on it. Replaced it, now it works fine. Good luck.

Re: my fuel gauge is going nuts!!!!!!!

I'll bet this guy makes your fuel gauge look normal

sorry I couldn't resist with the title

It's most likely the sender in the tank, and if your a busy guy with lots of apointments where you can't be late you'll want to fix it ASAP.
If you can afford to be late, a possible tow bill, and possibly not making it somewhere once then just do the mileage thing
