Excort Reliability

My Friend owns what I beleive to be a 2000 Ford Escort Sport edition. Its has 85,000 miles on it and its a 5-speed.

I might buy it from him, and I was wondering what the reliability of it is. Im in college so I don't really have the time to fix it, or take it into a shop, not to mention the money.

Whats your opinion on this.

And I beleive it has a fresh clutch.

Re: Excort Reliability

I don't know about the reliability of the 3rd gen escorts, but I have a 2nd gen 92 LX wagon that has over 500,000 KM (310,000miles) and the only major thing I had to do to it was replace the autotrans 3 times. The motor has never been apart and doesn't burn or lose any oil period. The trans I have in it now I got with 100,000 KM (61,000miles) and have put on over 200,000KM (122,000miles) myself and is still cruising right a long. The worse problem I have had is when the stut tower in the back gave out and I had it fixed, but I don't drive it much now and will soon donate it's parts for a 93LX wagon I just bought for $50.00 CDN

Take Care

Willy

Re: Excort Reliability

Like Willy, I have a 2nd gen - 93 1.9L. Probably the MOST reliable car I've ever owned. Did that carry over to 3rd gen? I can't say. Check out epinions.com for owner reports.

Re: Excort Reliability

weve owned a 95 escort since new in 94', and the only major porblem our car has had was that the heater core went out 3 times, once where the coolant leaked on the computer land fry'd it, and once where the car overheated, and cracked the aluminum head. but this is because of a mazda part.....the engine has been extremely strong, and the tranny too.

Re: Excort Reliability

I have a 97 4 dr, with over 140,000 miles on it. All that's been done to it has been a timing belt, brakes and a battery. Change the oil every 5000 miles and it will run forever. The third generation ford escort (1997-2002) is the best one they ever made. Just when they got it right they switched over to the Ford Focus which uses the same engine (2.0L SOHC SPI induction). Escorts are cheap to run. Miine gets 42-46 mpg with a 5 speed manual tranny and I would reccomend you buy that 2000 Escort.

Re: Excort Reliability

i have a 97 escort and it is great. it has 101,700 on it and so far(knock on wood) the only thing that wasn't normal routine maint. was the alternator and a new radiator and tension pulley. i love my little car and plan on running it as long as possible. it's a wagon so we have used it alot for hauling things and such. great car!
