Help me determine the cause of my problem.

Car: 1984 Toyota Celica ST
Miles: At LEAST 227 thousand miles, there may be a lot more, uncle says speedometer stopped working at one time, don't know for how long.

Problem: Difficulty cranking up when engine is cold. When engine is warm, there's no problem, but when it's cold, it struggles for a few times. I have to hold the pedal to the floor to help out, otherwise it would take longer.

I thought it might be the fuel injectors; if they need to be cleaned or replaced. Could it also be the fuel filter? I don't know much about cars, but I am slowly garnering knowledge about my own. And right now, I've lost my freaking manaul

Please help if you can, and ask for any more info if you need it.

Re: Help me determine the cause of my problem.

I haven't been able to check the starter, because Advanced said I need to take it out for that to get checked, and I didn't know how to do that at the time (and still don't). I doubt the battery is the problem. It did this when the battery was knew, and I've had it charged up this year as well, because I did drain it twice on accident (left the lights on twice when I was late for school).

Re: Help me determine the cause of my problem.

if you have to hold down the pedal to get it to start most likely its flooding itself, because with fuel injected vehicle pumping the pedal or pressing it to the floor while starting just shuts the flow of fuel off to the engine, I'd try the fuel filter first after that, it may need the cold start sensor replaced, the filter is cheap, I don't know how much the sensor is, and most likely you'll wind up needing a mechanic(if you can't find the manual) to install/remove it

Re: Help me determine the cause of my problem.

Well I found my manual, under my bed lol. I plan to change the fuel filter, and the oil. I also plan to check my manual transmission lubricant. It might be the cause of me having a rough time getting into reverse many times throughout the day, that's the only gear I have trouble getting into. Don't know when any of this crap was last checked, but I can't put my manual down, I keep looking at all this stuff I'd like to check lol.

So, can you recommend a good oil filter and fuel filter? Reading websites have got me skeptical about Fram and stuff, so what's up?

Re: Help me determine the cause of my problem.

Do that model of Celica have a cold start Injector?? If so I`d check that isnt blocked up which is a common thing on later Celica`s...usually located just after the throttle plate.

Re: Help me determine the cause of my problem.

I'm sure it has one, but I'm not sure how to get to it, or even how to check it myself. Haven't looked to much at the injectors yet. Give me some detail and I'll combine what the book says as well.

EDIT-Well I see what I'm supposed to do about removing the injector. How do I go about making sure it's not clogged? And if it is clogged?

id call neutral saftey switch, if im understanding correctly you goto crank it and its not doing anything for a sec then slowly gets going or does it start going but is hesitant?

If only I had a camera that recorded sound lol. I turn the key, it tries to start up, but it won't turn over on the first key turn, nor the second, third, and sometimes fourth lol. Once it gets going there is no problem, but it doesn't start on the first key turn like a normal car would. When it's trying to start, it does not become less repetitive, like it would if the battery was low and dying, but it probably would if I didn't release the key (my hypothesis).

Brrrrup-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit-tit (goes until I release key) (repeat on 2nd key turn)

Brrrup-tit-tit-tit-tit-Brr (I release the key thinking it'll crank all the way, and doesn't)(Reapeat on 4th key turn, maybe with less tits)

Brrrup-tit-tit-Brrvroom!!

There she goes, that's the best I can do without recording it myself lol.

So, C-Styles, think my car might have a cold-start. I have the Haynes Manual like yours I think. Green right?
