Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

I have a 99 F150 2wd 4.2l and I think i'm in need of a new clutch and thoughout bearing. When ever the RPMs and in the 2100 to 2500 range there is a rattling sound that sounds like its comming from under the cab. I've been told its probably the thoughout bearing but if I change it i should also replace the clutch and flywheel. Is this true and jsut how complicated of a job is this. I'm fairly mechaniclly inclined since i work at a body shop. Is there something i can use as a guide like a besides a haynes book that would help me? Thanks

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

How many miles on your truck? Under what condition in the 2100-2500 RPM range do you hear the noise? ie any gear while driving, while sitting still in neutral with clutch pedal down OR up? I am skeptical of your diagnosis of the throwout bearing.

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

There are 82k on my truck and the sound comes in 1st through 4th gear and sometimes in overdrive and when sitting in the truck in neutral if i give it gas to the 1700 mark you can hear it quickly but thats it then it stops. Its a chattering noise that sounds like something is rattling. Thanks for the help.

About the part when sitting in the truck in neutral if I give it gas to the 1700 mark you can hear it quickly but thats it then it stops. Can you hear it with the clutch pedal pushed in or with the clutch pedal up or both?

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

That's a tough one to diagnose. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

I agree, it doesnt sound like a throwout problem. If it were throwout/clutch related, it should change sounds when you mash the clutch, and the noise should change pitch with rpm if it were the bearing. Is there any vibration associated with it, can you feel it in the clutch pedal? If it were input shaft/pilot bearing related, there should be some vibration. Id be more inclined to believe its a piece of sheet metal somewhere, maybe a heat baffle on the exhaust , or loose exhaust hanger somewhere. Noises can be difficult sometimes, even if youre standing there listening ! Good luck.

I though it might have been the heat shield also, but apparantly i don't have one. There is no vibration difference when its making the noise. i've also been told its nothing and not to worry since my clutch doesn't slip but it just annoys me.

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

Just one other thought. I would check the bolts holding the starter on for tightness, also the engine to clutch housing bolts and the transmission to clutch housing bolts.

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

I checked everything and it all seems tight and fine. I guess i'll have to suck it up and pay someone who knows what there doing to check it out. Hopefully its nothing major.

Re: Clutch and throughout bearing replacement

Just a couple other things you might check before you take it somewhere. I have traced noise/vibrating sounds to a muffler before, on customers and personal vehicles. Sometimes a baffle or piece of pipe inside the muffler can come loose and cause a noise. If you can block the accelerator, or get someone to help and listen around maybe you hear where its coming from. And not to insult your intelligence, but maybe something under the seat rattling??? Just a thought ! Good luck.
