B18C5 Swap questions

I got a '97 civic. I'm looking to swap out my stock d16y8 motor and go for a B18c5 type R. The only place i've found to get the complete swap is a place called hmotorsonline.com. They want $4500 for the complete change over. Is that a good price or would I be over paying? The site says that the motors average 17,000 miles on them. I'm also looking to add a turbo to the application. Any suggestions on a good turbo. I only want to run 6-8 pounds of boost, for now at least. I also need a fuel management system I suppose as well. How high do you think my budget will get with everything I want to do? This car isn't my daily driver, but I want to be able to cruise around when I feel the need for speed. Other than that, I'll probably take it to import shows here and there. Thanks for you help!

Re: B18C5 Swap questions

Hmotors is a very well known and reliable place to buy an engine. You can also try passwordjdm.com, they're moving to a new building apparently so it might take a little longer to get one from them.
With a high compression engine and turbo, you're definently going to have to get a good engine management system and a professional tune. A lot of people will say not to turbo it, but you'll definently gain more hp at the same level of boost as a lower compression engine (like a GS-R).
For the budget, there are too many variables. Are you doing the swap yourself or paying someone to put it in for you? Are you going to buy a prefab'd turbo kit, or are you going to piece it together yourself?

Re: B18C5 Swap questions

You really run a risk turboing a type-r motor. The compression is really high on those motors already. You would be better off spending less money on a GSR motor (b18c1) and turboing that. With the extra money you save you can get Hondata and tuning. My friends stock GSR with a turbo kit from cheapturbos.com and Hondata made 282whp. That's plenty of power and already hard to keep traction with.

Type-R motors are great, just better for keeping NA in my opinion.

Re: B18C5 Swap questions

Thanks for the info first. I was looking at getting a prefab'd turbo for the motor. I want to do the swap the "right" way. I'll look into the B18c1. I was also playing around with maybe looking at the B16. For my application of turbo, the type r motor wouldn't be the right choice? Any suggestions on a fuel management system? I'm not that much of a new comer to honda's, but would appriciate a suggestion on management systems. I want a bigger motor because I'm already on my 2nd d16y8. Blew the other one sky high! Thanks for your help.

Re: B18C5 Swap questions

Hondata seems to be what is working best for most people. Don't consider the b16, the b18's are much better. More people use the GSR motor for turboing because of the lower compression than the Type-R. It is safer to boost a motor with lower compression.

OBD1 to OBD2b, assuming the ECU is a '00.
