abs light on

I OWN A 1997 GRAND AM. YESTERDAY AS I WAS DRIVING THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND A COUPLE OF MINUTES LATER THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE CAR DIED ON ME. IN MY OWNERS MANUAL IT SAYS TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF THAN RESTART THE CAR SO EVERYTHING CAN BE RESET.WELL THE CAR WOULDN'T TURN BACK ON FOR AWHILE.AFTER IT SAT FOR AWHILE IT STARTED AGAIN AND I DROVE FOR ABOUT 1 MILE AND BOTH LIGHTS TURNED ON AGAIN. WHEN I GOT HOME I TRIED TO START IT AND IT WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING.THE NEXT MORNING IT STARTED I BACKED IT UP AND IT TURNED OFF AND WOULDN'T START AGAIN.CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME KIND OF IDEA OF WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS.I DON'T WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON PARTS I DON'T NEED.

ALTERNATOR!!

Mine had a similar prob., my abs, ets, airbag, brake, and seatbelt lights come on for no reason. My car works fine. I tried restarting the computer but it did nothing. Could this be the altenator also? Also, where can i get a list of recalls on my car? '97 grand am se

Yep alternator, just another quirk of being a grand am driver it happend to me a while ago and it'll happen to all of us at one point or another, except my whole dash lit up like a christmas tree and all my lamps and indicators were flashing before my car just died all together and i luckly had enuff momentum to roll into a gas station.

My grand am lit up like a christmas tree when the alternator went out also. I was still 3 blocks from the dealer trying to get it there for repairs. That was a year and a half ago. Now it has eaten that alternator also and is back in the shop.
