84 caprice question
I recently pulled my 84 out the garage to drive it this past weekend and what i noticed was whenever it hit about 20-25 mph it wouldnt go any faster and it made a sort of idling noise/loud noise like something was being stressed under the hood. ...checked oil, coolant, and all the other fluids...so what could the problem be....

Re: 84 caprice question
If it happened all of a sudden, I'd suspect either the converter lockup solenoid or a totally clogged exhaust. You can unplug the solenoid plug from the tranny & take it for a ride. It's located on the driver's side of the transmission towards the front. The exhaust will whistle or try to escape elsewhere if it had a clogged cat or collapsed inner pipe. You won't be getting much pressure out of the tailpipe either.

Re: 84 caprice question
Mileage...145056
As far as maintenance goes...i just got the car about 2 or 3 months ago but i never had the chance to actually mess around wit...i got new distributor and cap, changed oil, filter, spark plugs ...the normal tune-up...but besides that i have not done anything to it because this was the first actual problem |

Re: 84 caprice question
If the engine revs ok, the cat is probably ok. I'd have the trans checked. If you got that far on the original, it's time.
