95 Died, can't get spark
EDIT: Please read 2nd post as things have changed direction.
Hello new member. I have a 1995 Subaru Legacy Wagon with the 2.2L. On Sat I was headed down the interstate and the car bucked a little, then a second later died. The tach went to zero as I coasted in gear trying to get to the e-lane. I tried to restart and there was no fire. I think I have traced it down to a Cam Position Sensor, but low and behold (always my luck), I can't find the right one. I have been to Napa, Autozone, Checkers, and even Subaru and no one has the correct part. One dealer told me there was a redesign on the part and the original is no longer available. The CPS differences: original has alignment ears on the electrical harness that are above the terminals inside. Replacement has those ears below the terminals. Original has the bolt hole approx 3/4" center to center from the sensor itself. Replacement has this hole about an 1/8" further out. What am I to do? I have no time to scrounge around endless junkyards and find a replacement that may or may not work and if it doesn't, how much longer till it leaves me stranded again? It's just frustrating that my DD is out of commision and it appears to have to remain that way. And just a month from when I was going to sell the car. Any help is appreciated or know where I can get the correct part. Thanks! J.D. Last edited by jesus_man; 03-01-2006 at 10:43 AM. |

Re: Cam Position Sensor help
Well it's all my fault. I need to be looking for a crankshaft position sensor, not a camshaft, but they are very similar. In any case, after replacing both sensors, I still can't get any spark to the plugs. We have ohm'ed out the coil and it matched specs and a new one, we have also check continuity between the sensors all the way back to the ECM and it all checks out good. The only thing we haven't replaced yet is the $200 ignition control module. My cousin (a mechanic) is going to the junkyard today to see if he can find a used one to try. If this doesn't work, we don't know where to go on this. Any ideas? Did we miss something? Thanks for your help!

Re: Cam Position Sensor help
It turned out to be the timing belt. It is shreded. We are replacing it tonight, but my cousin said we'd need a crankshaft pulley wrench, which Autozone says they don't have. Can anyone shed any light on that?? Thanks!
