Broken exhaust manifold bolts on mid/late 80's Bronco II w/ V6

A friend of mine from work was trying to replace a cracked exhaust manifold on his Bronco II and he ended up snapping off all but one bolt. He tryed heating, penetrating oils and just about everything else but no luck. He's afraid of using an easy-out because of the possibility of breaking it off and then he'd never drill it out. He's simply going to try drilling out the bolts and tapping in new ones. Is there anything easier he can try?

No, not really. I've seen a 'new' kind of easy out that comes in a set for about $50. It has some weird left-hand thread followed by a right-hand thread. I've been looking for an excuse to try them, but I don't think your buddy's cause fits the bill.

The bolts broke because they're heat-rotted. The best anyone can do would be to drill them out. (He might try putting a hemocoil (sp?) in instead of re-tapping...but he may have to come to grips that his block is shot.) It may seriously be easier to find a new engine than to climb in and drill for 9 hours. (Or about 1.5 hours per...with a decling return of about 15 mins per....or roughly three straight days!)

If he could get a high-grade 'spiral saw' or ('Zip saw') bit, it might go easier. I had to drill out a (1)bolt one time, and using a straight bit took forever and the result wasn't too great.
