Hear a "clunk" noise in front end!
HI, I have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 6 cyl. Over the past few months I have noticed a noise from the front end that sounds like a clunk. This noise happens when there is a bumb in the road. It doesnt have to be a pot hole for this noise to be heard. This happens at all speeds and doesn't matter whether I am accelerating, braking, or cruising. Tonight, I went under the car and checked if anything was broken or loose, but all looked well. While I was down there I also lubed up the steering and the ball joints via the grease nipples. If anyone has any ideas please help me. Thanks |

Re: Hear a "clunk" noise in front end!
When you looked under the jeep did you notice if the Linkage arm was broke. That happend on my '96, it broke on the top and everytime i went over the slightest bump it clunked, becuase it was hitting the shock. There are two connection points, on the top it connects to the sway bar, and on the bottom it connects to the axle. If that is broke off, you can also notice while driving, when you take a corner you feel alot of body roll. Other than that im not sure what it could be besides the ball joints or something.

Re: Hear a "clunk" noise in front end!
The Sway Bar End Links is a great point, if thats not it, it might me the shocks itself.
They Make BarPin eliminators for this, what happens is the bar pin (sections on the lower end of the shock that gets bolted to the axle) is not of great strength and it will wear out and cause a thump noise whenever you go overbumps becasue the barpin is moving up and down in the shock. check this out http://www.kevinsjeepparts.com/jksbpes.html |
