tranny fluid

I heard that if you havent regularly changed your tranny fluid you shouldnt start to because it will cause gunky stuff to come loose and your tranny will leak.

Is this true or is my friend full of it?

He said he did it for the first time in 8yrs and he had to get his tranny resealed and eventually needed a new tranny.

I think it was just time for his tranny to go out but he swears it was because he changed the tranny fluid.

Now we have a bet going and whatever you guys say will see if I win or lose.

P.S. we're betting an even $200 and bragging rights.

Re: tranny fluid

He's kinda right. It does happen sometimes when you neglect the fluid. But sometimes it's the only way to get them to work. Try adding an additive like lucas oil treatment in if you change.

Re: tranny fluid

O its not for my car.

It was just a question.

So is it that the fluid gets so gunky and thick with dirt that it becomes some kind of bond?

Re: tranny fluid

Actually just changing the fluid is good at any time whether it was done on a regular basis or not. If you change the fluid and filter you will not hurt anything. Flushing a transmission that has high miles can cause a lot of issues including failure. The fluid in the transmission will eventually wear out and the trans will fail that way too. So change the fluid and filter and just don't flush it out. You will not have any issues by doing this and the filter can become clogged and the transmission will not work either.

Re: tranny fluid

so changing the fluid doesn't cause failure.

but flushing out the tranny might cause the failure.

Re: tranny fluid

Yes changing the fluid does not cause failure since you are only replacing a portion of the fluid at a time thus a portion of the old fluid will remain. Just make sure you use the recommended transmission fluid for the vehicle.

Flushing the transmission on the other hand runs a large quantity of fluid through the transmission and in doing so washer over the clutches and discs causing the face material on them to be washed away. Then new fluid is put into the transmission. Most high mileage transmissions that are flushed fail within 10000 miles. Flushing low mileage transmissions, less than 50K miles usually will not damage anything but if there is more than 50K don't flush unless you want to replace the tranny.

I hope this helps you with your friends!
