Unhappy suspension squeaking - driving me nuts!!!!

I've picked up a front end squeak, and it sounds like it is coming from some rubber bushings. I don't have it in the warm weather, only the cold (under 50 degrees). I have a 97 1500 with a 5.9L, Sport 2wd package, auto trans.

The bushings have not responded to lube, white lithium grease, WD40 or water cleaning. Any other suggestions? Has anyone ever changed out the front end bushings, and if so, how tough of a job is it?

Thanks!

Re: suspension squeaking - driving me nuts!!!!

In the shop we used to spray all rubber bushings with silicon spray, it softens the rubber. If that doesn't work, brake fluid softens and swells rubber. You might check your shock mounts. The shocks sometime have a tendency to loosen up, first they squeek then they will start clunking eventually. You can buy bushing kits but some parts need to be replaced completely to get a new bushing.

I had a sound in the front end that I couldn't figure out. It ended up being the trans linkage. Just another thing to look at.

Re: suspension squeaking - driving me nuts!!!!

great advice - thanks guys for all of the help. I'll start trying those suggestions this weekend. Makes sense, especially softening the rubber and tightening the shock mounts. Interesting about the trans...here's why.

Once in awhile when I go in reverse, I get a slight buzz/rubbing sound from the rear end. It does not last, and it is periodic, not everytime. Just another one of those noises that can be nerve-racking...

Appreciate all the help!

Yeah, it sure does sound like an old door hinge. How much of a job was it to change your ball joints? It does not look too bad to me, maybe a couple hours total for each? Any nasty surprises in getting the old off and the new on?

Thanks!!!

Re: suspension squeaking - driving me nuts!!!!

well the 2 wheel drive is easier than my 4 wheel drive luckilly for you. if you have coil springs, you will need to rent a spring compressor and a ball joint press unless your ball joints are the bolt in type. you'll have to check what you have for me to help any further since i have a full front axle 4 wheel drive and they are different.

The cure for squeaks like that is loud exhaust.
