Angry New Member needs help!!!

Hi, I've just bought a used 1998 Zx2, I was really happy whit my Escort but the other day I took it to the highway and my automatic trany downshifted when I was going about 65 MPH, I took it to the shop and they told me it was the turbine speed sensor, my question is: Have you heard of this problem/replacement part? Or did I got ripped off?

Re: New Member needs help!!!

the auto tranny's are shit. you will here nothing but bad news about them in this forum... the guys to ask though are altec and skater in ny. they are by far the most knowledgeable. but you will have to be open to thier opinions. i have an auto in my 03 i have 30 miles, the front clutches started fouling at 19 grand, thats further then some trannies the zx2 has had. but ild ask around, and ild also peroose the other threads, youll get tips on anything from performance, to us griping over the trannies.

Re: New Member needs help!!!

tss is a common problem in most trannys..

do you have hard shifts? (and raised shift points?.) do you have to let off the gas for it to shift?

I wouldn't say the trannys bad, speed sensors can make it seem like it's going though.

Lightbulb Re: New Member needs help!!!

Thanks for your replies guys, so now im wondering, if it is the speed sensor, my question is, is this hard to replace? is it expensive?

This is what my car does, it shifts to 2nd gear hard, and sometimes when im going faster it downshifts...

yea it's the TSS .. if it was the VSS your speedometer wouldnt work or would read erratic.

on a contour the job is pretty straight forward, it mounts right on top of the transmission and a couple screws to unscrew it. I don't know how it is on the ZX2

if your tranny is slipping then no, Changing the speed sensor will not fix the problem.

The part is approx. $125 from Ford, the only source to get one. In the ZX2, you have to remove the air filter and filter box and lift it out of the way. Just buy the new sensor and check the wires, I believe it is only 2 wires, thus matching the 2 wire on the transmission. I believe its the one on the right side, towards the front, if I remember right. The Turbine speed sensor just has an o-ring that holds it in the hole, and a clip that is held down by a screw. So you unscrew it, then pull it out, after undoing the electrical connection. Installation is just inserting new one, screwing clip down, and reattaching the connection. I just replaced mine last fall because I lost overdrive/random downshift. Hope this helps.

Re: New Member needs help!!!

just remember to make sure the o ring came out with the old vss. if it doesnt you may have a problem puting the new one in.... or it could cause premature failure of the new piece.

Re: New Member needs help!!!

I just replaced the TSS and that solve the problem, I got it at Ford, and it cost me about 140.00 Dlls, I replaced it my self, it was very easy.
