97 GXE No Power/Whine/Shaking

My car has run 220k miles as of last week, and for about a year it's reeeeally slow at acceleration. When I first got it I could top at at twenty mph increments per gear, now it's down to ten. Clutch?

Also whenever I get higher in gears I seem to hear a faint airy whining, any suggestions?

Whenever I hit about 60mph+ my car starts to shake....a lot. But I'm replacing the cv joints as both are torn and then getting it realigned, whenever I slow to a stop the car rocks because it obviously needs it. But is this the only reason my car is shaking?

College kid that could really use some tips before wasting money he doesn't have...thanks!

Could you clarify this statement?

Well I don't have an rpm gauge, but I used to be able to accelerate first gear to 20, second gear to 40, third gear to 60, and fourth gear to 80, which I'm sure was a killer on the car....but now if I try to get on it the car will just rev real loud and kind of shake after 30mph in 2nd, 40mph in 3rd, and so on.

Re: 97 GXE No Power/Whine/Shaking

So let me see....

If you were traveling in 1st gear and reached 20mph and the car started shaking, then shifted to 2nd, the shaking would stop until you increased speed in 2nd?

If so, the problem can't possibly be anything to do with axles, cv joints or anything like that. It seems to be rpm related. You could be misfiring, but the motor would be shaking all the time, even at idle. I don't know much about transmissions, but it sounds like that's your problem.

Because the motor would be shaking all the time(not just at higher rpms), and the drivetrain would shake consistently over a certain speed, that only leaves the "input" side of the tranny. It's hard to explain when I don't know much about trannys, but the problem has to be in the "beginning" part of the tranny where the speed of the "sun" gear matches the motor's speed, before the ratios change from one of the five "planetary" gears.

So, basically, it's in the clutch, flywheel, "sun" gear areas.

Yeah it doesn't shake when idle, just as it gets higher rpm's in the gears. That's what the mechanic said too but I wanted to make sure he just wanted me to spend 570 bucks =P Thanks so much bro! And one more question...what symptoms would I get if the fuel pump started goin out?

The car would be misfiring and stuttering. The motor wouldn't be smooth or consistent at all.
