AWD drivetrain compatibility

I may be acquiring a 92 TSI AWD shell soon. I am going to need the whole engine/drivetrain except the 4 bolt rear. It will be getting a 6 bolt engine. I am wondering about the tranny, t case, axle, and driveshaft compatibility. Will any 1g AWD tranny, t case, axle, and driveshaft work, or will only certain years work? Thanks guys.

EDIT: Sorry for not searching thoroughly, my head is pounding so hard I can barely concentrate on the screen.

Re: AWD drivetrain compatibility

I believe all 1g axles and driveshafts are the same. The tranny and tcase changed over the years. 90 tcases have a different spline count, and the tranny output shaft does as well naturally. You can mix and match by swapping output shafts (need to remove the endcase and pull the VC to do it), or just make sure the tranny and tcase you get have the same spline count.

Re: AWD drivetrain compatibility

I think one has 22 splines and the other has 23, not sure which is which, I have an awd trans and tcase (matching spines) off a 90 gsx (manual trans), let me know if you're interested.

Re: AWD drivetrain compatibility

DAMN GUYS! I just found a 90 TSI AWD with a blown head gasket for cheap (not telling because I dont want any of you to get it before me )! I realized that building a shell would cost lots more and be much more difficult, so I doubt that I will be getting that one guys shell... to build. It does have a EPROM and a 4 bolt, I may buy it just for those. Is the 4 bolt a direct replacement for the 3 bolt?

Re: AWD drivetrain compatibility

I've never done the 4 bolt swap, but I've seen someone do it in less than an hour, so it shouldn't be too bad. Maybe half a day for a first timer?

Re: AWD drivetrain compatibility

FUCK YEAH!!! They buyer (admin of dsmstyle.com) backed out, leaving me next in line! Appearantly, the admin went to check it out yesterday (monday) and said he'd get back to the seller this morning. Well, he doesnt want it and when I talked to the guy yesterday he said that if the admin didnt want it, it was mine. There will be a thread on this soon, as soon as I get it which will be either this weekend or spring break which starts next thursday. FUCKING YES GUYS, THOR IS FINALLY GETTING THE CAR OF HIS DREAMS!!!!

Hey pr_ricer, want to help me change a head gasket? I will drive it back the way it is, but if I can change it down there, I will. Where are you at again?

EDIT: Shit, I didnt realize you were so far away, Austin is on the border with Iowa right? Oh well, i'll just have to buy lots of coolant!

Yeah austin is like ~20 miles from the border, otherwise I would be more than happy to help you out. If you get all the parts before hand it will go really fast. If you need any help just let me know and I can try and walk you through it since I just did it on my car
