Decoding The V.I.N.

Hey guys, I just bought a BMW 318is and I would like to know how to interpret the car's VIN. I know what each number represents (ie. 1st number is from which country...etc) but how do i interpret the letters....like for example what does W stand for in the first letter and so on.... id really appreciate your help. thanks.

p.s. ill be posting more threads since i just got this car today. are there any websites where i can find usefull information or not so expensive parts for sale. thanks again.

Re: Decoding The V.I.N.

The first 3 digits from the left are the manufacturers code.

4us=BMW Spartansburg
NC0=BMW South Africa
WBA=BMW AG
WBS=Motorsport

The next 4 are the model code

The 8th digit is the restraint system

The 9th digit is a check digit used internally

The 10th is the model year
A=1980
Z=2000
O and U are not used in the US

11th is the plant code
L=Spartanburg
A=Munich
B&D= Dingolfing
E=Regensburg
N=South Africa

12-17 are the sequential production numbers
