Possible purchase-96 Altima w/75K, auto,leather- what should.....

I look for besides the obvious?I did quite a bit of searching on the web but didn't find much concerning 96 Altima idiosyncracies. I am thinking of purchasing this car from a private seller for my girlfriend.Are there any specific problem areas with this model that I should double check before buying? Seller is asking $3300.00 but will probably take $3000.00 even (I hope). Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, wpod

Ask if the engine has ever died while driving. Distributor problems are common. Check the radio, remote mirrors, power door locks, windows, cruise control, and A/C. Look for the check engine light to come on for 3-4 seconds when you first turn the key before starting. The light should come on and go off. When will the car need brakes? Rear wheel disc? A plus. Make sure cooling system is on your list of the obvios. Altimas are a basic, dependable, get you where you want to go vehicle. Great choice for rental cars. Altima accessories are not as reliable as the rest of the car and as on any 10 year old car regardless of miles or good care become a liability rather than an asset. Comparing late 97up resale value to older Altimas doesn't benefit the buyer. Newer Altimas are above basic transportation of the '96 they have transitioned from and share the model name. Don't be afraid to offer $2700 and walk away to let the seller think about it for 30 min. Advertised at $3300, hoping for $3000, and preparred to take less than they hope for. Just think! You will save enough to take your girlfriend out to dinner and buy her flowers. Then show her the reclining leather seat feature. Will she laugh and think good things or what?
