96 taurus tranny advice
Help! I've got a '96 sable with an AXOD (metric) transmission-the car has over 230,000 miles on it which didn't scare me because I've had Fords go much farther than that. Anyway, the tranny started slipping out of gear on deceleration but when I would turn it off and back on, it would go up through the gears without a problem until I started to slow down again. My check engine light was already on due to O2 sensor issues, so I don't know if the tranny problems would have turned the light on. I'm debating on replacing the transmission or the car, but the answers I get are usually to go to a junk yard to find a used one. What are the chances that the one I get is going to be any better than the one I have? I know that the AXOD's were a problem for Ford in '96. What other transmissions will fit in the car and what years?
Thanks for your help. I'm driving a '92 Tempo that's pushing 300,000 hard miles, and it's going downhill fast. Cindy |

Re: 96 taurus tranny advice
the only other trans that will bolt in is the AX4N, but to do so you'd need the computer for it and the Vulcan+AX4N was a VERY rare combination. If you want to keep the car, I suggest a rebuilt AX4S (the proper name for your AXOD Metric) which should run about $900 + Install. Otherwise, i'd junk the car.
