Unhappy electric fan conversion

this might be a stupid question, but my 1997 4d blazer has gone through 2 fans so far. At 130 a pop, I figured switching over to an electric fan would be more economical. I have an idea of how to do this, but any further knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Also, my mileage took a huge dump in the last year I've had it. From 22 to about 12. Anyone else having these same problems, or do I just have a clunker?

Re: electric fan conversion

I believe Rlith has done this conversion, and I think he might have posted a how to. Check out this thread and see if it helps any http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...tric+fan+rlith
If nothing else, you might want to try and search the forum yourself. It is a pretty good way to find specific subjects.

Re: electric fan conversion

Do a little dance with the search feature and you'll find lots on both topics. Then come back and post anything you still need help with.

Oh and welcome to the forum!

Re: electric fan conversion

Also feel free to PM me on the subject, I did the same thing as Rlith on my Blazer about 6 months ago. My wiring is a little different.

Just a warning in advance I might not have internet eccess for a few days so I might not answer it very fast.

Re: electric fan conversion

I converted mine to electric when I did a body lift . I used a 16" fan that I had from a previous project , It is not enough as a primary for a 4.3 in warm weather . Hayden recommends 2-14" fans , although I can't see how they would fit in my 89 model . I am adding 2-12"s in the spring . Several companies make universal and some custom units with shrouds . Just don't undersize it if you do it . Rob

When they are going, are they locking up and won't disengage?

Re: electric fan conversion

Don't think so. Basically, the plastic fan breaks around the bolts that connect it to the clutch. Dealership said this is a common problem and sold me the reinforced one. A month later, it too is broke, making a sound like bolts in a blender when I start my truck.

Re: electric fan conversion

I would look into your fan shroud.

It might not be lined up properly.

BTW, you should have to keep on buying them, there is a warranty.

Hope you are not shelling out more money for a defective part.
