Re: transaxel

If you have a V6 it is a getrag, if you have a four cylinder it is an isuzu.

Re: transaxel

Hold the phone! MY '88 GT has the Muncie 5-speed. Just went through this last Winter. Definitely neither the Isuzu OR Getrag... The service manual has pics that help identify it.

eh, you're half right.

first off, the GTs had a muncie 4-spd up until mid-86, then switched to the Getrag. however, IIRC that particular transaxle was classified as a Muncie/Getrag 5 speed, so you're right and wrong. i could be mistaken, its been awhile since i researched it.

Re: transaxel

Just rebuilt the thing last Summer. Listed as "Muncie". Definitely a 5-speed, definitely NOT an Isuzu... Can't say about the "Getrag"... The local manual transmission supply house had "Muncie" in all their books, too. According to them, '88 was the only year in P-body. Later cars (Baretta, GrandAm, etc.) used it as well. I know ALL the parts they supplied fit! They even got me a "used" ring and pinion (damaged when carrier bearing went South...).

Re: transaxel

yeah if i remember from reading my factory manual (oh what fun that was) it was designated MG-some number i dont remember, the muncie/getrag, probably some kind of cooperative thingy since getrag made a lot of transaxles and muncie was known more for the strong FR transmissions in muscle cars and such, but thats purely from a logical reasoning standpoint
