cav. won`t start

HELLO all i have a 2000 cav. with a 2.2l i`ll try to start it. it`ll start for one second then shut off. I`ve tried turning the switch on for 20 minutes that didn`t work. Tried turning switch on undo the neg. battery terminal for two minutes then hook back up and try to start but no good. guages don`t work right or read right i think it`s in my security system. Is there any way to by pass that system? the car has a theft lock system/ security system. I was told it is in my switch part that my key and tumbler go into not the ign. switch itself. I`m lost! please help

Re: cav. won`t start

Check to see if your cavalier has a recall on the ignition circuit. I have a 98 cav, and it had this recall, which I just got take care of. If the ignition switch is held in the start position for an extended amount of time, it can generate too much heat, which could lead to a bad ignition switch, and even cause a fire. The end up installing a relay in the starter circuit to keep all the current out of the ignition switch. I don't know off hand if the 2000's had this recall, but it wouldn't hurt to check. When they install this relay, they are supposed to check the ignition switch to see if that is ok. Since it won't start, I guess I would call the dealer (if it does have that recall that needs to be taken care of) and ask about possible things that could happen when that switch gets bad. Hope this helps!
