Question Compression Ratios...

Just curious, how would you go about lowering the compression ratio on a motor. Head gaskets? Is there anything else involved? I believe the comp. ratio on my 305 is 9:5:1, would it be possible to drop it? Say aroun 9 or 8 possibly?

Re: Compression Ratios...

Link, why in the world would you want low compression? Plan on getting in the geo metro class at the stirp?

Re: Compression Ratios...

Or he could be going in the other direction with a 30lb boost twin turbo set up.

Anyway, you should be able to drop the comp ratio by just finding new pistons.

Re: Compression Ratios...

I don't know how far i would get with the 305 N/A, but with money anything is possible. But with some boost, i can get some numbers i believe i'm looking for with some ease, with the proper knowlegde of course. I'm not going the "drop a bigger motor route" as i've already had plenty of chances to do so. I'll see wrightz28, just don't think i can get that far with it that way, but the idea about it is astounding!! Pull up next to a Z06 and shake his ass loose.
Z06 guy: "What you got there is that POS?"
Me: "305 Baby!!!!"
Z06 guy: "Ready for some new school, door blowing action?"
Me: "I don't think so pal"
And i proceed to but buslengths on the Z06. (Hey, we have the right to dream, right?)

Re: Compression Ratios...

Ok, but what's the practicality in this? How many times do you see a Z06, ta say anything about the opportunity to try and take it down?

just hate seing people start projects like this, get in way over their head and the car just sits and sits, then life catches up on you, you get older, get married, have kids, and either spend all your time updating your house, and worst case: wife is tired of looking at your scrap heep that all the old baby items area packed in boxes on top of and wants it gone.

Next thing you know, your cruis'n in a 4 door, a cool ride goes by with a nice exhaust tone, you shed a tear and start to feel nostalgic about your old ride.

Re: Compression Ratios...

Wrightz28, you are scaring me man. I'll do this btw. I just need the knowledge, know how, tools, and funds to do these things. I don't plan on having kids no time soon (knock on wood), plus, while in school if you have good grades and perform well, you can make your car or whatever a free project. Choose who you want and what not, pretty neat. I'm definitely down for completing things i have started. I'm not startin it now, cause i gotta worry about school. Something i definitely wanna/will do in the future. Long term project.

Re: Compression Ratios...

dish top pistons are one way... thicker head gaskets... cylinder heads with larger combustion chambers... etc
