Problems with my 71
Everytime I turn the engine there always a clunking noise and then sometimes a winding down sound following it. I don't know if it's a carb problem or like a buddy told me could be cheap gas. I've been putting regular gas in this car for about 3 months now since I've bought it and it's doing this all of a sudden. Don't know if I should switch over to premium. The car also idles too fast right when I start it up coudl this be the choke?

Re: Problems with my 71
When your car starts up and idles too fast you probably have to adjust the idle screws, they should be located around the linkage on the carb itself. I had the same problem when I installed my new carb on my 71 nova. This might help with the start up problem, if it doesn't it sounds like it might be a starter motor problem, I know a while back one of the screws fell out of the starter, so it was very loose and clunked around when I attempted to start my car up. I would also check your fuel filter since the car dies off, just to make sure fuel can get to the engine to begin with. I just had that problem with a 95 minivan, it would die off as I started it up.

Re: Problems with my 71
Is this only during starting the motor or while it is running? Is it a metalic clunking and then does it sound like an electric motor spinning down? (Starter?) Can you provide some more detail on this

Re: Problems with my 71
It wasn't any of these things. The choke wasn't set up right, problem solved. Thanks for the input everyone!
