97 Transmission

I have a 97 s10 ss with an auto trans. I was leaving my house the other day and pulled out and tried to get on it and the truck jerked and a loud pop all happend at once. the it has a whinning noise. I drove home and found out no reverse either. I decided to replace the fluid and filter just to see if that would help. That was a waist of time now it will not evan shift out of first gear. Anyways to my question I am getting a remanafactured trans installed for $1265.00 plus tax and thay came and towed it. they deal was originally 1200 but for some reason it went to 1265. Does this seem like a good deal? Thanks,David

Re: 97 Transmission

My 97 Sonoma had a similar thing several years ago - no reverse - dealer replaced the "sun sensor" (?) - can't remember the cost. Don't know if it's a good deal for you but at least your getting a whole remanufactured unit rather than one new part... Good luck

Re: 97 Transmission

The part is actually called the reaction sun shell. It is a known weakness in these transmissions. It's failure causes a loss of reverse, 2nd, and 4th gears. Due to it's location in the transmission, the transmission must be disassembled to replace it. Most people spend between $1800 - $2500 to have their transmissions removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled. $1265 is a decent price to have a remanufactured unit installed. Just make sure that it has the recommended upgrades, such as the stronger sun shell, and the redesigned valve body.
