HERENDISS noise

1997 LS 4 door 4x4 120,000 miles

On my trip back to pittsburg from philly about 3/4 of the way here i felt some type of bad vibration from the car and it was effecting the speed almost as if my parking brake was on and i was riding on the bumps on the side of high ways at some points. I treid to forget about it untill today got in it started up i checked all my fluids, they all were good got in and went as i started to accelerate normaly it sounded like a grinding noise, but a high pitch one. the best way i can describe it is like a drill, Drilling though metal when its hot kinda of noise. And also has a bad tapping noise like the way a peice of metal would sounds as if someone would to hold a pipe against the spokes of wheel while the wheel was roating. Once i left off the gas and crusie its gone but once i acclerate its sounds terrible. I fear its in the rear. Where its the rear its self or even a pinon bearing I'm gonna drop it off at a chevy dealership to see whats wrong w/ my baby. I crawled underneath and saw nothign wrong, no fresh fluids, metal flakes nothing out of the ordenary.any one here hear of somthing like this.

I know before when i would first put it in gear and not move it would engage and the car would jump and once i would move say 5 feet i would hear a "PING" from what woulds like the tourqe converter. It would also do it when i would be coming to a stop but not stop all way and than give it gas it would kinda of rev up just a lil than "PING" and than it would move, this may be a totaly diff problem if any at all. BUt right now the truck runs fine, If i had ear plugs in i wouldn't be able to tell my car is making noises likes its going to blow up I worked in a garage for about 2 years and i herd all kinds of nosies cars can make, But never like this

Any ideas???

Hope it's not the tranny... (You don't wanna get stuck downtown with a bad tranny) If so, you can probably get a good deal on one from Wagners over in Zelinople.

My uncle and I rebult it over the summer but i don't think he did a very good job, But we will see. I just looked at the U joints all 4, everything seemed ok no visual damage or anything that would seem like to be bad, the all felt solid when i tried to twist the drive shaft i guess i'll find out 2-morro when i get the news

Just asking, What is Herendiss?

just got the word today, The u-joint at the diff. Was trashed. He said that its looked fine visually but they were sure it was coming from there, So they took it out to look at it, and they said when the took out the u joint it just disenergrated in their hands. so 65 for diagnostic, 65 for parts a labor. I was expecting alot bigger of a bill than that, but i'll take it

They also said my rear diff cover is leaking But a gasket problem. As in the metal has a whole in it, I know its trashed from the snow and salt in philly, But i was going to put a new on, But i wanted a chrome one any on know where i could pick one up at, I tried advanced auto and pepboys and no luck? The place i took it to wanted 240 for parts and labor, and a new re diff cover, on top of the other bill, I think thats preety steep altough i donno how much those diff covers run for they can't be that much

Good deal on it not being the tranny For a chrome one you can look at summit (re edlebrock and a few other ones)

You can grab a used cover for 10 bux at most bone yards and a 4 dollar gasket to keep ya going until then.

Re: HERENDISS noise

Day late on this one.

I had the exact problem about six months ago.
Only I thought it was a wheel bearing. I just let the truck idle and leaned underneath. It was very obvious.

Did you replace both or just one?
I highly recommend doing both at the same time. Then you can at least grease them in the future.

While I had my front axle out I greased the one on the front shaft for good measure. Even though it looked great.

I'm only having them do one. When i'm in school i drive it may be 4 miles a week tops, I go back home for spring break in 3 weeks when i'm home i'll put 3 more in one more on the tranny side of the rear shaft and the 2 on the front drive shaft, It will save me some money. But yea i wouldn't have never thought it would be something that small making such a huge deal
