brake line

Hi, I have an 87 Cutlass Supreme.

Recently I have been losing brake fluid, takes about 2 weeks to drain the resivoir.
I found the leak, it is about a 6 inch section of brake line that is rusted... the rest of the line is good.

My question is do I have to replace the whole line?
Or can I cut the bad section out and patch it with a rubber flex line?

Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Why do you think I was asking the question. Because I don't know the answer to the question!

How do I section it off with "flared unions"??

Thanks.

Re: brake line

Cut out the rusted area, get a double flaring tool and 2 unions, measure a section of brake line, cut to length, double flare the cars lines, double flare the new section of line, put the union nuts on all the lines before you flare them, then use the unions to make the final connections. Due respect here, based on your original question, I would suggest you get some help with this repair.

Considering the brake lines are original in this car, am I better off to replace the whole line?
I was looking at it today, and front to back it is all looking pretty rusty.
My concern is if I cut out the section and try to flare it that the line will be fatigued.

BTW no disrespect taken, just never had to do brake lines before.

Re: brake line

Find a solid unrusted area and splice it there if the line is to thin you won't be able to double flare it.

Hey Maxwedge,
I ended up replacing the line from front to back. It was pretty rusted all the way from front to back. Quite easy to replace it.

Strange that at the front it was 1/4" and at the back was 1/8". Had to buy the line with the 1/8". Cut it and put a 1/4" fitting on and flare it. Anywho...

My new problem is bleeding the bloody brakes.
I can not get the bleeder screw to loosen!
Is there any other way to bleed the brakes? Or will I have to give in and find a garage to do it?

Thanks.

Re: brake line

Soak the bleeder o/n with PB blaster, then rap the area around the bleeder, no too close, with a hard drift punch, this may break the rust up that is holding the bleeder.
