LT1 or LS1?

I was wondering, if i had about $9000 to spend on a camaro to make it as fast as i could, would i be better off getting, a lt1 or ls1? I like the lt1 looks better but that doesn't matter all i want right now is performance.
I know that the ls1 is a lot more powerful stock than the lt1 but i can get a ls1 for about $8000 and a lt1 for about $3000 so that leaves me with $1000 vs $6000 to modify what ever one i get. i know that a $5000 difference is a lot but from what i hear a ls1 with $1000 of mods is pretty fast.

I was also wondering about the lt1s top end performance compared to the ls1. I know the ls1 is insane up top but i haven't really heard anything special about the lt1, accept how its bottom end it a bit better.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

You should go one more step and just get the LS2. I think I found a crate LS2 in my GM High Tech Performance Mag for around $7K.
LT1's are heavier that LS1's.
LS1's have a better top end, but LT1's have have a crap load of low-end torque.
Both have excellant potential with a huge aftermarket possibilities.
LT1's have that troublesome optispark.
Either way, since you plan on adding a lot of stuff to the engine, I advise you to get a block, whichever one, with low miles. Adding stuff to a high mileage engine is not the most cost effective.
For my own personal opinion, as I have an LT1, I would go with the LS1. More base power to work with.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

I didn't like the looks of the ls1 camaros very much either, but after riding in one I don't think there is a sexier car. With the money issue I would say get the ls1, it's a newer car so hopefully everything on it will last longer and be in better shape. Also if you get the ls1 and save up a couple more thousand I think Mr. Louis said that he got 370+ to the wheels with only 3 grand in his car.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

are you trying to buy the whole car or just the engine...if the whole car id say lt1 cause you can find lt1 cars pretty cheap these days...then you will have plenty of money to trow on the engine

Re: LT1 or LS1?

In my opinion you have more potential with a LT1 but the LS1 is a better performer right out the box but not by as much as some people lead you to believe.

Re: LT1 or LS1?

thats a tough desision. for that amount u could get a lower mileage LT1 or a slightly high mileage LS1. LT1's are slightly cheaper to build the LS1 is lighter and would be faster stock. I say either way u can't loose

Re: LT1 or LS1?

Rouda those numbers are useless when he's gonna have the remainder of the 9k to spend on the car (especially since, at least with the LS1, they were "conservative" with the rating)
