amp hook-up

ok so i'm new to hooking up stereo systems, my friend has a 91 jeep cherokee and now has a 4 channel kenwood amp, jl audio w3 and 2 pioneer 6x9's. we went to hook it up and i'm pretty sure everything was correct, we did not hook up the 6x9's, but does a four channel amp need to be runnin at least 2 speakers for it to work? aslo where the battery wire and ground wire are hooked up to the amp, next to those two is " p. con"---what is that???? any help would be tight thanks

First off for a four channel amp to work it only needs to have 1 channel connected to push out sound. Some 4 channel amps are able to be bridged to have 2 connections running off all 4 channels, but bridging is not recommended by many unless you have plenty of airflow as the amp will run hotter bridged. And for any amp to work you need to have a power wire from the battery, a ground wire of same wire size as power, and a remote wire from the head unit connected to the amp for it to turn on. Then a pair of RCA cables connected from the head unit to the amp to send the music signal to the amp and then to the speakers. Not to familiar with kenwood amps as it's been a while since I've been around them but the connections for the amp power should be a + on one side a - on the oposite side and between the two a smaller connection for the remote wire which is probably the P conn. that you are referring too.

Blah Blah..... Okay Run the power wire from the batt+ to amp. Ground the amp to the Chassis. Run a remote wire from the back of the HU to the remote on the amp. Plug in the RCAS from the HU to the amp. Wire up the speaker no less then 2 ohms for a single channel or 4 ohms bridged and set the gains properly and boom.

what are rca wires and how do i wire up the speaker for 2 ohms? i already have the battery and ground wires set-up

RCA cables are the same as the cables that you would use to connect a dvd player in your house with the red, white, and yellow connections. For car stereo's it's only the red and white connection and better cable design. On the back of your cd player in your car it should have a set of connections coming out of it to connect them to then connect the other end to the amp. For wiring the speaker down to 2 ohm's you either need 2 4 ohm single voice coil speakers or 1 4 ohm dual voice coil speaker. If you have that then to wire it down to 2 ohms just run a wire from positive of either one speaker or one voice coil to the positive of the other speaker or voice coil and the same with the negative connection which will give you 2 ohm's. In the future if you have multiple speakers and want to wire them down to different ohm ratings the equation is this (R=ohm's) R1xR2 divided by R1+R2 so if it's 2 4 ohm speakers it would be 16 divided by 8 giving you 2.
