2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic Stalling Problem

I purchased a 2000 Cherokee Classic after owning a 1993 wrangler for 9 years and 167000 miles. The vehicle had 43000 miles off lease when I bought it in summer 04, and now has around 70K. Recently, I developed a stalling problem after extended idling (its cold here!!!) or when idling at a stop light. The problem only seems to occur after extended operation right now...

As far as potential fixes go, I have had an extensive fuel system flush, throttle body decoke, new plugs, engine diagnostic, tune up, etc, and the mechanic has yet to find anything "wrong" with the Jeep. The stalling isn't too much of an issue, as it is sporadic and rarely occurs outside the confines of my driveway. Also, the idle isnt rough - actually, its quite smooth and I have noticed significant HP gains from the new hi-performance plugs and throttle body clean out. I also dont have any hesitation or sputtering/loss of power at highway speeds or during acceleration. However, I really like to meticulously maintain my vehicles, and am frustrated since I always knew the wrangler would start and would get me where I needed to go without burning a drop of oil (it was also MUCH easier to work on!!!).

Any hints on what source of the stalling problem might be? I have heard the battery may be the culprit, or possibly the Cam Position Sensor...any hints on the problem? Please help, as I LOVE my Cherokee!!!

When it stalls, does it start right away? If it starts, does it run smoothly? If it doesn't, how long do you have to wait?

Is it throwing any trouble codes?

How long is "extended"?

When it stalls, it does start right back up, no problem. Also, I would say extended idling constitutes 10-15 minutes to get the car warm enough to stand on the way to work - dont foresee much of that in the near future as spring is nearly upon us.

When it was on the diagnostic, it was running completely normal, no sign of a problem, no codes have popped up or anything else like a warning light or something like that - hence my concern...

I belive the 2000 still has a CKP (crankshaft position sensor). This could be causing the problem.

I think it does...the problem seems to have worked itself out for now after the serious tune up. Also, someone was mentioning that water in the gas could cause a similar problem, as I experienced that with my wrangler after a spring thaw one year - I also added HEET to the gas to fix the potential h2o problem...

Will keep posted if the stalling returns...

HELP!!!

Still stalling intermittently at idle, MPG's are down somewhat - took a trip and got 300 on a tank (all highway) but then 240 in city driving. I have put in hi performance plugs, and as I mentioned, injectors cleaned, throttle body cleaned, etc. I disconnected the power last weekend for almost an hour to try to reset the PCM...seemed to help a bit but now strange symptoms still occurring. Today when taking off from a red light, the XJ stuttered off the line for a split second, like a really hard hesitation, almost stalling symptom before resuming acceleration. Taking to JEEP dealer tomorrow for full diagnostic. They think it is either TPS or CPS...don't know for certain. Would the (any) sensor problem also cause the poor gas mileage? I would imagine so...any suggestions??? THANKS!!!!

HELP!!!

Taking the XJ to JEEP tomorrow...The intermittent idle stalling has returned. Last weekend, I disconnected the battery to reset the PCM for almost an hour. Seemed to remedy problems of stalling and poor gas mileage as I got about 300 miles (all highway) on about 17 gallons. I have new air filter, a twice-cleaned throttle body, hi-po plugs, and CLEAN injectors...last tank i only got 240 city driving - this seems low from last summer where I was getting 275 city driving. Today after a green light, I stepped on the gas to accelerate and the truck lurched and sort of hesitated, then presumed to accelerate per usual. Jeep thinks that TPS or CPS is the culprit, and will be doing full diagnostic tomorrow. No codes flash right now though...

Would the sensor continue to cause this intermittent stall at idle, the poor gas mpg, and the lurch/hesitation as I tried to go from stop to start? any input is GREATLY appreciated!!!


(MY 93 YJ was a great truck - always knew what was wrong and always was able to fix the problem, even if it was loud!)

Try replacing the fuel pump relay. it might be getting hot and shutting down. causing your jeep to stall from no fuel
