The most terrifying.....

Ok, I say Im lucky because I am alive for one....Tonight I was driving down the freeway on my way to a thing I had to do...Me and my friend were in the car and I changed lanes....I ran up 4th gear and when i shifted to 5th the jerk from it mustve done something, because before I knew it I am very quickly making an appointment with the road sign ahead! It felt as if the right front wheel decided to lock up! I was in the right lane and it jerked me over onto the shoulder, the steering wheel had broken loose from my hand and by the time I wrestled it back over (way over) and got on the brakes we were almost in the grass and damn near fishtailing back onto the highway! I stayed on the brakes, which thank god didnt lock, and brought the car to a very scary an unpleasant stop, after flying past a sign and some cars at higher than highway speed....

After we stopped pissing ourselves we got out of the car to see what had broken, the ball joints were all intact, all of the bolts were good, the welds I had done were still good....I couldnt figure it out. Finally I started the car, and it lurched forward. I couldnt stay there and I had left my cell phone on the charger (of all the days). I drove the car on the shoulder, all the while with the wheel at about 9 o' clock, and the most hideous metallic sound coming from the right front wheel. We got into a gas station and took the wheel off. The sound is coming from either the outer cv joint or the wheel itself, as in bearing possibly. It is a horrible grinding popping squealing sound that gets far worse and makes the whole knuckle shudder and jump when I turn the wheel left than if it goes right.

Sorry for the long drawn out story but I felt I had to give some background for a proper diagnosis. What could it be? CV? Wheel bearing?

Oh and I dont need a lecture, Ive learned my lesson, but I had topped out my ecu and the cutoff of the fuel was the sudden jerk, when it kicked back on that is. ecu cutoff=118mph+/-=the scariest experience in my life...

Re: The most terrifying.....

Since the other post was an error:

Damn bro that sucks... Glad to hear you and car are alright tho, coulda been MUCH worse! Honestly tho, you should be able to see exactly what is wrong... Id jack it up in the daylight and look... I have no clue what it could be... I dont think it would be the CVs tho, Ive known ppl whove driven on bad CV joins for literally yrs with nothing happening...

Re: The most terrifying.....

My cv joints were fine before, I had rebuilt and checked it when I welded it up. I had the wheel off and in pretty bright light, put the car in gear and turned the wheel and just went deaf, its so loud.

Re: The most terrifying.....

Check your bearings... That sounds like it would be locked up... If nothing else, give them a check. But, it could be worse... It could have been raining or sleeting... I've had a few scary moments in my life... But I'm glad my angels were bumping me in the right directions.

Re: The most terrifying.....

I hear ya on that one brother, something was keeping me out of the grass last night....

That and I said that it was a good thing the brakes didnt lock because They did once when some moron stopped in front of me, the car fishtailed then spun around, went from the middle lane through the left turn lane (empty, luckily) of the intersection and into oncoming traffic, luckily it was a red light and no one had started moving yet....I stopped about 5 ft from an oncoming ford taurus...backwards.

Re: The most terrifying.....

Well I am fine, the rex is fine as well, now...$74.00 and one c.v. shaft later that is, the outer joint (one of my assumptions) was trashed, not visibly..but it took a hammer and an act of god to make it pivot! Also my alignment (done just 3 days ago, for the 3rd time) was screwed again. This time I corrected it myself and I did a better job than those idiots at firestone...It's finally centered and does not pull or feel like I'm dragging the tires down the road.
