97 xlt high idle at start

my 97 ranger xlt manual 4.0v6 is starting at 3000 and idling for 3-10 sec's at it then gos down to 25 or 18. sucking gas like crazy. cleaned the throttle-could it be the TPS or am I looking at more serious problem?

If I remember right, there's a special coating on the T.B. that may have been removed.

Yes, it could be the IAC valve, it could also be a few other things. Do you have a check engine light?

Thanks for so quick reply! Yes I have check engine light but it is always ON since the temperature guage is not working.
The idle at start is an intermittant problem. Happens either 1st start of the day or the 3rd or 4th.
