I have an 89 jeep cherokee. 4.0 litre
one night on my way home the pcv valve grommit thats on the valve cover blew off it was so old and i had a huge oil leak. I replaced the pcv valve and grommit the truck still idled shitty 500 rpms then i replaced the other hoses then the truck stared to idle at about 100 rpms when warm noticed the oil in the air filter spoke to the dealership they told me to clean the valve cover i popped it open looked black on the inside i unscrewwed the 2 breathers carefully keeping the gaskets as good as i can. I noticed that the on metal plate the one for the pcu valve (looks like it controlls the air flow out of the engine) was bent inward i guess my father tried to plug it up temp. so i bent it back cleaned it the breathers were black but air looked like it can get out fine i didnt clean them out justed used the degreaser spray and let it sit then flushed with water then let it sit. truck still was shitty losing oil leaving a pool in my air cleaner the air comming out of the hoses looked smokey i dont know if that is normal. I think i am doing something wrong and i dont know what I never had this problem with my 88 pioneer and its pissing me off cause i love the truck. the idling problem also rattled my tail pipe causing it to break before the catilitic converter and i need to replace that. I have been leaving a vaccume off to keep the engine idling higher then it used to now its up to about 1,000 rpms but i know it isnt right. also there was a white foam to the top of the dip stick and milky at the bottom i was reading thats due to moist air. should i just replace all the hoses again and really clean out the valve cover better I dont know what to do =/ |

Re: 89 jeep cherokee oil in aire filter I know what your thinking replace the hoses etc
sorry i ment to say CCV system...also both hoses seem to be pushing out air rather then sucking it in i get smokey air going into the valve cover from the larger hose the one thats in the front of the engine.

Have you done a compression test? You could have excessive blow-by due to worn or broken rings on one or more cylinders.

Re: 89 jeep cherokee oil in aire filter I know what your thinking replace the hoses etc
How many miles are on the engine and when if ever was any major work done to it. I used to have a 92 plymouth voyager and experienced the exact same problems that you are talking of with oil in the air filter, smoke coming out of the hose and also the valve cover if you remove the oil filler cap and also a creamy white residue on the oil dipstick. Are you having any problems with the engine overheating or going through alot of coolant. If so then the problem lies with the coolant mixing with the engine oil causing the creamy white residue in the oil pan. Two things could cause this to happen, worn or broken piston rings as jeepme stated and the other and more expensive is a cracked block. The plymouth voyager I had had a cracked block in it and the problem got to the point that it would not start and when it did start it would puff out so much smoke out of the exhaust it looked like I had a james bond smoke screen. Hopefully for you is it just simply a matter of worn or broken piston rings and that the cylinder walls are not damaged (which would require pulling the engine and taking it to a machine shop to have the cylinders that are damaged bored over and new piston piston rings and maybe connecting rod). You have the inline six so I can tell you that if it is the piston rings it will not be an easy job to do but can be done in a weekend given all the necessary tools are on hand. If you do the compression test and it comes back that 1 or more pistons have damaged rings causing the compression to be off email me at [email protected] and I'll be glad to answer any questions you have about completely stripping the engine down and replacing the piston rings as a couple of weeks ago I had to do this to my 92 sport inline 6 so it's all still fresh in my mind the tricks of doing it. Let us know what you come up with.

Re: 89 jeep cherokee oil in aire filter I know what your thinking replace the hoses etc
It doesnt have a smoky exhaust...if i had a worn or bad piston rind what wold happen is the oil which is under the pistons would get stuck in the ring seep into the cylinder and when compression happens fire causing smoke out the exhaust like a smoke screen i have normal exhaust nothing out of the ordinary. the anti freeze looks normal and doesnt overheat.. i know that 89 had a closed coolant system so it needed to be bled of air. the milky residue is caused by air vapor i notice it on the top of the dip stick and on the bottom tip.

you need to replace the VACUM HOSE

Re: 89 jeep cherokee oil in aire filter I know what your thinking replace the hoses etc
you need to replace the vacum hose at the rear of the valve cover. You need a good strong vacum from the intake manifold to the rear of the valve cover. Even if you feel some vacum with your finger , its just not enough. The hard plastic hose fills with sludge and carbons up over the years. After you replace the hoses you should be suction from the big hose leading to the air filter. The white foamy stuff could just be from condensation, change the oil , also remove the throttle body and clean it out good, clean the iac valve as well as these are probably all covered in oil. Go to this link I posted for more detailed info. I haven't had any sign of oil anywhere since.

i replaced the hose from the rear of the engine twice...i picked up a bottle of stop smoke itas like a goopy substance that you poor into your oil to help against blow by and when the engine is warm it seems to have suction... it doesnt seem to suck alot but there is suction... i cleaned the brass valve also im looking in my clitons book about the IAC valve not sure where that is.

it should have tons of suction, not seem to have some when it warms up, there should be a lot of suction as soon as you fire it up. I would try another vacum source off the intake manifold.

Re: 89 jeep cherokee oil in aire filter I know what your thinking replace the hoses etc
i have lots of suction out of the rear hose...its the front one that had the suction problem!! it seems too leak very trivial now is there supposed to be suction off the vaccume motor in front of the air box?
