92 Saturn SL2 won't start

I think I just blew up the SL2. It won't start. I took it to a local mechanic and he doesn't know anything about the twin over head cam. He thinks its a timing problem. I need help...has anyone had this problem?...What do you think is wrong?

What exactly happened to it? It couldn't have just died under normal driving conditions. If you could explain what happened before, during and after the 92 gave out on you it would be a big help to everyone trying to figure this out.

Re: 92 Saturn SL2 won't start

yeah give more input, and any good mechanic should be able to find the problem. just because a mechanic is not familiar with a certain car doesnt mean he shouldnt know how to fix it. when i was working in a shop, i knew quite a bit about saturns and some other models, things my boss had no idea about yet he could fix any of the. and it helps to have the mitchell guides which are extremely expensive to keep up with, yet he had them.

that mechanic should have diagnositic equipment, if hes a true mechanic.

Re: 92 Saturn SL2 won't start

It ran just fine for a while, then it started to kinda choke, like a fuel filter problem. Then while my wife was driving it, it started to give out at stop signs. Then when I backed out of the drive way, it just wouln't turn over. Then I put it on a battery charger for a day and it still wouldn't start. Forgive my ignorance...I'm just not sure where to begin...Alternator, battery, fuel filter, ??????

ok so now it doesnt turn over, or it turns over but doesnt start? just need to be 100% clear with this, and are you hearing any noises? starting clicking, fuel pump, relays, anything?

Re: 92 Saturn SL2 won't start

Sounds to me like an extremely clogged fuel filter may be the cause.

However, it is more likely that the fuel pump has died.

Easy way to check: Turn key to ON position, but not all the way to crank the starter. You want to listen for a click coming from below and to the right of the radio area, which is the fuel pump relay activating. Right after the click, you should hear a whirring sound for 1 to 2 seconds. That's the fuel pump energizing. If the whirring sound is very weak, low-pitch, or slow (longer than 2 seconds) that means you need to replace the fuel pump.

If you turn the key to the ON position but you don't hear a click, your fuel pump relay may be dead. However, a relay doesn't slowly die -- it dies instantly. This scenario doesn't seem to match what you described. If the relay doesn't click, you can swap the fuel pump relay for the HVAC relay next to it on many Saturns. They are identical. You can read the part numbers to be sure, but there's no need to swap if you hear the click.

If the relay clicks and the fuel pump energizes as it should, go pick up a fuel filter and change it. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, it's been too long.

Let us know how it goes. If these things don't work, we can explore other possibilities.
