Cruise control doesn't do anything

96 Concorde Lxi

It started out that when I tried to use cruise control, it would kick on, and then would usually randomly shut off after anywhere from 1 - 30 minutes, but on occasion it would decide to stay on. Now, however, the button doesn't do anything, and the light doesn't even come on.

I found the electrical connectors by the firewall, but haven't had a chance to unplug them/clean the contacts. I'm looking for any and all possibilities for things to try when I decide to brave the cold again (it's ~15F outside, which is colder than it usually gets all year.)

Any ideas? Other than that, the car runs fine... except for chugging a bit of oil.

Also, what kind of oil does a 96 concorde lxi take? I misplaced my manual somewhere at home, and I'm at school now. The oil's at MIN now, and I want to top it off.

Re: Cruise control doesn't do anything

Update: I was dumb and didn't do the key thing right, so I now have the error code. It's 34: open or short to the cruise solenoid. I pulled the wires out of the servo itself, and tried plugging/unplugging a few times and nothing. It doesn't look like that wire goes through the main bulkhead connector, so I'm a bit stumped.

Re: Cruise control doesn't do anything

I was going to say check out the switches at the steering wheel or maybe the clockspring went bad until you said it threw the 34 code, sounds like the Cruise servo or the dump solenoid went bad, (Both are in the servo unit) make sure there is vacuum to the servo first by unhooking the hose with the engine running and check for vacuum, if present then try replacing the servo, they should be relatively inexpensive at a wrecking yard providing they didn't cut the cabling.

Does the vacuum hose just pull off? The Haynes manual doesn't say much about the cruise control.

Re: Cruise control doesn't do anything

For a while, the cruise would turn on if the steering wheel was turned to the right, and turn off when I turned it left. Any idea where I'd be losing the connection?
