22re engine swap questions

I have 86 4x4 that has a bad frame. The engine runs great at 150k. I found a beautiful 88 4x2 with a blown motor so I was hoping to have someone swap the engine in.

I live in an apartment and will have to pay someone to swap the engine. How much does a job like that usually cost?

I know it might not be worth the time or the effort, but will the 4x4 drivetrain fit on the 4x2 frame? Are they the same frame? I know it might be a bit pricey to have someone do that but with a imaculate frame and body, it might be worth it.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: 22re engine swap questions

Since both trucks have a 22RE, swapping should be fairly painless. A good shop should be able to do it in 2 days, 3 tops. Figure ~$70/hr for labor and do the math to get a ballpark idea.

Converting from 2WD to 4WD is a lot more work, and if I was going to spend the $$ I'd ditch the IFS for a solid front axle.

Re: 22re engine swap questions

You did not specify where you are located.Find a friend,relative,neighbour,co-worker or local off-roaders where will replace your engine for about $300 max that's taking the both engines out and swapping in the good one. Also call your local community colleges/vocational schools and they might do it for free.
