1991 grand prix se

ok here it is i got a 1991 pontiac grand prix se and when the motor gets warm where it should be, when i come to a stop and hold the brake in the engine stalls but it will start right up again but i have to shift from park to drive fast before it stalls again. If anyone could help me out i would greatly appreciate thanks

Sounds like it could be a bad torque converter.

does it stall as if it were a stick shift and you forgot to push in the clutch? If so, your TCC solenoid (it controls torque converter lockup/unlock) is sticking or bad. To test, look on the front of the transmission case up high between the side cover and the engine. You will see a square 4-prong plug, unplug it and drive the car to see if the problem goes away. If it does with the plug unhooked, it's definitely a TCC issue. you can drive the car temporarily with the harness unplugged, but the trans will get hotter than normal on extended highway drives, and mileage will suffer slightly also. Try Seafoam, Trans-X or Lucas automatic transmission additives and see if they can un-stick it, as these products actually work. If they can't free it up, you'll need to replace the TCC solenoid.

thanks i changed the fule filter and the problem seemed to have gone away for now anway
