starter

Alright since i bought the jeep i have been haveing problems with it stalling erraticly (cps) finaly it wouldn't start all together. Replaced the cps and it did the trick, well for about the past week it has been turning over slowly during start up, untill yesterday when it didn't start. I turn the key hear the fuel pump, and thats all, no click from the celinoid so first i thought alright bad celinoid, and i tryed to by-pass it and it didn't turn over, so my thoughts are bad starter. It makes sence because of the months of trying to start it with the bad cps. Tryed tapping it wtih a hammer nothing, so i think i am gona try to replace the brush's first and go from there. i was looking at the haynes manual and it said that i may have to remove the exhast pipe or maby lift the engine, i really have not had a chance to look under it beacuse it is cold out here, just wondering if all that is really nesicary to get to the starter, any tips would be appriciated, or any other idea's about the problem at hand. also it has a new NSS

Re: starter

Have you tried jumping it with another car or battery first? Check the battery connections and grounds.

Re: starter

I have an 88 XJ. I did not have to remove anything else to drop the starter. There are just 2 bolts holding it in. The exhaust pipe isn't even on that side. It may have been referring to the V-6.

You can pull the starter and use some jumper cables to bench test it.
