Ummm, usually you have to pull the whole motor to change the piston rings... Unless there is a way I've never heard of before.

If you do try it that way, you are gonna have a hell of a time putting it all back together properly and getting it in time while its in the car. You are better off pulling the motor out completely and putting it on an engine stand... Just my 2 cents though. If you try it with it in the car then good luck...

Re: easiest way to change piston rings on 96 eclipse???
I know its possible in other cars to drop the oil pan and pull the head and unbolt the rod caps and pull the pistons out from the top but I dont know about doing it in an eclipse, my guess is yes, but it would probably be better in the long run to just pull the whole thing because you might as well hone it while your at it.

If you have to ask you shouldn't be doing it yourself.

For example, when I was all into computers a few years back, I would take them completely apart and put them back together again just for fun. But then again, one of the old computers that I tried to reassemble did catch on fire. LOL

Re: easiest way to change piston rings on 96 eclipse???
no to be honest i dont even think its the rings i am just asking to learn a bit. if i have to take the head off and unclip the piston from the bottom and pull the piston up and rering it then i have to do it and i have not other option
i was just asking. my friend did it for me before on my other eclipse. this eclipse probably has a bad fuel filter or a bad plug wires or a bad coil its not working right. im going to figure it out soon though what happened was i Was driving one day, while shifting, engine lost power. stopped by the nearest gas station to check it out. Reved the engine to around 3k rpm, then let go. Engine came to an almost stall... then reved it again, it then died. would turn and run once in a while. but would die soon after. didn't overheat before hand. if you have any suggestions from this point on let me know |

Could be a fuel filter...

Re: easiest way to change piston rings on 96 eclipse???
For the original question... Yes you can change the piston rings with the block/crank/tranny still in the car.
Pull off the head, pull off the oil pan, unbolt the rod caps and push the piston/rod combo out the top. Re-ring the piston, replace the rod bearings and put everything back together. I wouldnt exactly recommend it because the cylinders specs should be checked and rehoned but it can be done and will work. |

Re: easiest way to change piston rings on 96 eclipse???
How about doing a compression test? If it's turbo also do a boost leak test as well. Don't rip apart your engine if you don't have to.
