2000 z71 5.3 Can't get spare tire down

I know this sounds stupid but my spare tire hoist will not give it up..

I bought my truck 5 years ago, used, and had my first flat last night. That's when I realized that I didn't have the jack handle. So, my GM dealer sold it to me for $102 bucks...Just the handle, not the jack. Anyway, I assembled the handle but it would not catch on the hoist and I couldn't get the spare down. Anybody had this problem, any ideas on how to fix it.

And forget about the three metal rods that GM charged me $102 for...crazy.

ended up buying a used spare from the local tire shop for $50.

Also, my three metal rods that cost me 100 bucks were stamped "Made in Mexico". GM needs to get it together. Stop passing on their high labor costs to us via insane mark ups on useless parts...Sorry to be so bitchy..but I just dropped $100 on $5 worth of metal....

Thanks in advance.

Were you using all 3 bars on the hoist? The one with the flat, curved end is for the jack only. Use the other 2 for the hoist. I can send you pics of the tools,if you like.

I think there's actually a recall or a TSB about the spare tire not lowering. I know my stepmother's GMC had the same problem.

Re: 2000 z71 5.3 Can't get spare tire down

I have a 2000 that I bought used and it too was missing the spare removal tool. I tried to get it out with my dad's tool out of his 2005 and it did not work. Could this be because the tools are different or that possilbly my spare lowering system is jammed or broken in some way? Luckily I have not needed the spare yet. But I'm sure I will be screwed one of these days.

Re: 2000 z71 5.3 Can't get spare tire down

Rammer500...If you could send or post a pic of the end that is fed into the hoist that would be great. I only have three pieces and I know that there is supposed to be 4. And yes I did assume that the flat, curved end was suppose to be fed into the hoise first.

sounds like my hoist might be okay, I just need the other piece in order to get it to connect.

Thanks to all.

If you email the pics you can send the to [email protected] or just post.

Thanks again....

Re: 2000 z71 5.3 Can't get spare tire down

And when I stated above that I only have 3 pieces I was counted the lug wrench that is used as the handle on the hoist. Sounds like I am missing one of the extension bars, and it is the two extension bars that are used to work the hoist??

I think I am now officially the type of guy "who couldn't change a flat tire"

Re: 2000 z71 5.3 Can't get spare tire down

whe i got y truck one of the first things i did was check my spare, when i did i found that it wouldent drop. at first i thought that the end of the rod wasent catching whatever is on the inside right, then i found it wasent goin in all the way. Whoever had the truck before me must of raised the spair i tier and tightened the fuck out of it because the tire bent the little tube that the rod had to go down. Honestly, i forget how i eventually got it down but I had to bend the tube back straight, maybe this is your problem.

Re: 2000 z71 5.3 Can't get spare tire down

i had a recall that gm sent me involving a rubber rod to be included inthe process or maybe swapped for one of the metal rods. Why? Because the metal rod would not quite line up with the hoist machinery under the truck. So go back to dealer an ask for the rubber recall rod. Say it three times fast...jj
