Question '97 Lumina 3.1 sometimes won't stay running

My '97 Lumina has the 3.1 with 165K miles. It has started a frustrating new problem. It does not always do this , but when it does this is what happens:

Shortly after starting, when put in gear (forward or reverse - car has automatic trans) engine will die. When restarting, car usually cranks right up, but may run rough for a few seconds. When put in gear, engine dies. After a few times of this, car cranks and runs as if nothing was ever wrong.

It does this sometimes first this in morning. Sometimes when stopping for gas or to shop, etc. Sometimes every time it is cranked. Sometimes several days go by and no problem at all.

I live in Florida, and it will do this/or not do this on cold days or warm days equally the same.

Any Ideas?

Check for corrossion at the fuse block under the hood.
Possible one injector intermittently shorts to ground.
Check resistance of all injectors.Should be no less than 11 ohms or they are
on the way out. Usually they read around 14-15ohms.

have you checked your Idle Air Control Valve? when the diaphram goes bad they tend to either let too much air by or not enough thus causeing the engine to run or die

Smile Re: '97 Lumina 3.1 sometimes won't stay running

I looked at the connections on the fuse blocks. They looked OK.

I then did a tune-up: comprised of new plugs, new wires and new coils ... the problem is gone.

I still am not sure if I had a cracked coil, or if one of the many wires I had to un-plug and re-plug to do the tune-up may have been the fix.

Anyway - It now runs. It also runs smoother and quieter than it has in a long time.

Thanks

Those musta be really shabby wires. Thinking back, could humidity have been the factor that made it act up?
