Unhappy Engine Light and ABS Light

Hello from the sunny isles of the Bahamas.

I recently purchased a 1996 Inspire with only 45,000 mile (when converted)..got it serviced and now the engine light is coming on after driving for a while and when I cut the car off and back on again it is not there until a long while....The ABS light comes on also. The car does not loose power but the light is making making me very uncomfortable being a single mom I don't want car problems.

Can someone please tell me what they think the problem is. The locate dealership does not deal with japanese so its difficult. Contacted the company where I purchased it and they said it is obviously not a major problem because the engine would have shut down...needless to say I am very concerned. What should I do?

Re: Engine Light and ABS Light

I hate to say this but disconnecting the battery so the check engine light (CEL) will disappear does not solve the problem. If what's causing the problem is still there, the CEL will come back on. NOTE: If the CEL is on steady, you may continue driving the car but have the problem fixed as soon as possible. You see, the car computer simply compensates for the effects of the problem, so the vehicle runs OK for a time but eventually the problem will get worst. If the CEL is blinking, you need to stop the car as safely as you can. To me it sounds like you have a defective ABS and/or speedometer sensor. You will need to have it fixed as soon as you can. Your problem is access to a good mechanic. They can extract the code from the CEL and determine exactly where the problem lies. I guess the Bahamas is ideal for vacation but not if you have car problems.
