Crazy electrical issue.

I have a 2000 M/Y Rodeo V6 2WD. It has a crazy electrical issue. If I turn the ignition off with the headlights on, the engine keeps running. As soon as I turn the headlights off the engine shuts off. Also the parking lights and dash lights are illuminated any time the ignition is on. (even with the headlight switch in the off position) I tried unplugging the chime module, but it still happens. I also priced out a multi-function switch from a dealer and it runs $250 +. I don't want to invest in this if it won't fix the problem especially since they will not let me return any electrical parts. Has anyone seen an issue like this before or do you have any suggestions?
It driving me crazy!!!

Re: Crazy electrical issue.

I'd start by swapping around relays in the under-hood power distribution box. Maybe swap the a/c relay around to see if the problem stops. You may have a shorted relay (common problem). Other than that, rodeos have a tough time with trailer wiring harness connectors. Pull that out if you have it.

G/luck

Re: Crazy electrical issue.

I tried swaping the relays around, but it didn't help. I removed the trailer wiring also, but the problem is still there. I started pulling fuses and found that if I pull the ignition fuse the problem goes away. The headlights work properly with this fuse out, but obviously the car won't start. If I unplug the ignition switch the problem goes away. I'm not sure if a shorted ignition switch could cause this problem or if it might be something that the ignition switch is powering up. Maybe a module of some sort??? I guess I'll keep looking......

Thanks for the input rodeo02.
