Buying a 1992 3000GT SL. Opinions, comments, inner-most emotions please.

The eclipse will be retired for a little while as a weekend car, since it's practicality has been severely impacted by all the modifications that make it unsuitable for regular street use. One decent pothole is all it'll take

As it so happens, my friend is selling his car to me, the deal has already been made, and I would appreciate any general commentary on the issue.

This California car is a red 1992 Mitsu 3000GT SL, 5-speed with 130,000 miles. Extra's include a short-shifter and an aftermarket stereo with dual 12" woofers/amp. Out the door for $2500, but it needs a new clutch.

I'm very excited about the entire prospect of owning such a sexy "beater", especially since I was looking for a boring (yet bullet-proof reliable) Honda.

What do you guys think I got for the money? I noticed the KBB for the car was around $4300. Can't wait to put some 5Zigens on there already...

My main concern is always maintaince. The 60k and more applicable to you, the 120k tuneups, are a big deal with these cars. Timing belt, pulleys, tensioner, waterpump, oil pump, etc. Not things you want breaking on you, so hopefully your friend already took care of that.

Other than that, it sounds like you got a pretty good deal. A nice new clutch upgrade will only cost you $300-400, and a stock replacement you could find for half that. So with the $1900 you saved, you could pick up a nice set of rims, clutch, and lightweight flywheel. And have yourself quite a nice daily driver.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
