How much torque on idler arm?

I really hope someone can help me out. I’m almost finished going through the front end of my 97 K1500, but I’m stumped on the idler arm.

The idler arm is really two pieces – the bracket that bolts to the frame and the arm that bolts to the relay rod. I’ve found the torque specs for the bolts that hold the bracket to the frame. I have the torque specs for bolting the arm to the relay rod. What I cannot find is how much torque you apply to the nut that locks the arm piece to the bracket piece.

I’ve checked my Haynes manual and Alldata.com. They only have the information for each end, not the middle. I hit the public library this evening for a Chiltons. The Chiltons book doesn’t even cover idler or pitman arms. It mentions rack and pinion for 2000 and up, but nothing for my 97.

Does anyone know how much torque to apply?

Thanks

The nut you refer to should have been torqued when the idler arm was manufactured. I have never seen a value for this and every idler arm that I installed there was no need to adjust it.

Re: How much torque on idler arm?

That's what has me stumped. The only idler arms I've seen were one assembly. This one is made up of two pieces. It's like the pitman arm and the steering box.
Here's the bracket :http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...ype=63&ptset=A
And here's the arm :http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...ype=63&ptset=A

How much torque do you apply to bolt them together?

Judging on the size of the shaft I'd guess 50 ft pounds.

Re: How much torque on idler arm?

Thanks for everyone's input. The shaft that the bracket mounted to had an allen head shaped recess. You have to hold the shaft to prevent it from turning while tightening the bolt with a wrench (15/16th to be exact). Couldn't use my torque wrench, but I think I got it in the 50 ft lb neighborhood.
