99 Ram 1500 ?
I just found out that the O2 sensors and Catalytic converter on my 99 1500 5.9L need to be replaced. Rather than paying the $1,000 the dealer wants, I was wondering how hard would it be to do myself ? I'm no mechanic mind you, most I've ever done is replace a couple water pumps, radiators, and starters. So think of me as an amateur. How hard is it?

If its the stock cats they have been mandated and have to replace them.

I received a recall through the mail a month ago from Chrysler to replace my catalytic converter. Last week my local dealer replaced it at no cost to me. I too have a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup.

Cats are covered under a 8 year 80K fed emmisions warranty. Also like said have your dealer check your vin for recalls. It does not sound right for cats and 02 sensors both to go out at once. If cats are bad find out what caused them to go bad before replacing or they will go bad again. Are you sure they are bad? How are you checking the cats and 02 sensores for being bad? Have you run a back pressure check? Aftermarket parts places sell direct fit OEM type cats that do a good job on older vechicles like a 99 . And a lot cheaper than dealer stuff. MT

Mileage does matter if it is not on the recall list. The feds only make the dealers warranty them for 8 years or 80,000miles. |

Re: 99 Ram 1500 ?
The last time I replaced a converter I went to an auto parts store and it was about 1/4 the cost of the dealer. I bought my O2 from autozone. A little hard to get to and usually rusted in pretty good. If you can change a spark plug you can change an O2 sensor.
